Does anyone knows why the reserved word PROCEDURE with nine letters is not
abbreviated as PROC when e.g. `variable' with eight letters is written VAR.
As procedure headers for type bound procedures tend to get quite long such
an abbreviation is even more natural.

Short answer: because it was like that in ALGOL.
